Carl-Axel Acking Tokyo Nordiska Kompaniet Elm Arm Chairs (2)

ITEM #: C154
A pair of Carl-Axel Acking Tokyo elm armchairs for Nordiska Kompaniet. Acking was a Swedish architect who, like many of the time, also designed furniture. Possibly his best known design, the "Tokyo" chair was designed for the Swedish embassy in Tokyo, Japan in 1959. The chair, constructed of solid wood, in this case elm, is a noble and well designed piece. The arms and back are formed from three solid pieces that are carved to form a continuous organic curve. The arms flatten out towards the front and a nice touch is a discreet recess under the arms for your hands. We love the legs which widen slightly at the bottom giving the piece a grounded and solid feel. The leather covered seats appear to "float" atop the chair only supported in the center portion from the stretchers below. These chairs would fit well into virtually any home or office setting.
